YellowDog is hiring a back end software engineer to help create its intelligent predictive scheduling and orchestration platform for hybrid and multi-cloud management.
This is about delivering sophisticated new product features for release to our state-of-the-art software service that helps customers to schedule, deploy and manage their cloud compute optimally.
We can help you get to grips with our tech, the domain and its ecosystems. Your work will have a positive resource-saving impact for our customers, currently across the film/CGI, aerospace and financial services sectors.
We're a small and expanding software development team building, from the ground up, a unique orchestration and service mesh solution. It's a microservice-based architecture, where you can contribute substantial new code and ideas around any of; applications, distributed services, integration, systems, data handling and the dashboard.
Java is our main language to do this, along with some Python for AI and analytics, and we can allocate projects that build upon your strengths.
It's a fairly flat team structure and we employ an iterative, lightweight design process where everyone on the team gets to make input. We're Agile and manage our work using a gentle Kanban process with regular stand-ups and we encourage a lightweight, productive approach to development.

Example projects within the team
- Building microservices that provide global compute coordination, resource scheduling, data management, adaptive data transfer, analytics, billing, access control etc.
- Common abstraction to different cloud providers, optimised to best practice for each cloud provider
- Integration with a rich ecosystem of tools and adjacent systems
- Supporting our move to Java 11
- Using our new compute platform to upgrade our large-scale CGI rendering application
- Developing intelligent predictive scheduling and resource management based on heuristics and machine learning
We're looking for
- Someone ready to help create sophisticated distributed applications
- Familiarity with Java - even if this hasn't been your main language
- Understanding of - or strong appetite to learn - the inner workings of cloud applications, infrastructure, serverless etc.
- Appreciation for clean code, good documentation and knowledge sharing
- Adaptability, receptive to change and pragmatism
- Someone considering mid or senior level back end jobs in Bristol such as: Java Software Engineer | Java Developer | Back End Software Engineer | Back End Developer | Systems Developer | Cloud Infrastructure Developer etc.
