Blackout is hiring a remote full-stack engineer to help design and implement its groundbreaking infosec and compliance technology.

We help companies to meet their regulatory obligations, limiting unapproved communications in the workplace and ensuring greater use of authorised channels.

By limiting smart device functionality utilising situationally aware technologies, this also helps to minimise distractions at work and enables employees to improve their productivity, separating work from personal phone usage. Our technology will also protect school students from distracting and potentially harmful phone usage, for improved learning and safer play time.

We're forming a new team - bringing development in house in readiness for customer trials and product build out. Your work will be key to designing and implementing the admin consoles, dashboards and their underlying business logic, plus exploring and building new concepts, methods and offerings as we grow.

Optionally, you may also build on your strengths and interests more broadly, contributing on aspects such as DevOps methods, CI/CD pipelines, the UIs, data management, system integrations, solution design/config, and more.

We're looking for

  • Someone comfortable joining an early stage company, working across multiple products and code-bases
  • A shared belief in upholding data security, user privacy, unit testing, documentation and knowledge sharing
  • Agnostic about technology, language and framework choice
  • Adept with modern PHP (we're moving to PHP 8), and familiarity with Laravel
  • Ideally, some React or similar
  • Competent with SQL
  • Ability to design and implement RESTful APIs
  • Familiarity with Docker, Git

You may also bring, or like to learn, skills such as

  • Deploying apps in AWS
  • CI/CD, Terraform for IaC
  • One or more adjacent language (e.g. Node.js, Go, Java, Python, C#)
  • Building serverless applications
  • Integrating with native iOS and Android apps (e.g. push messaging)
  • Data visualisation e.g. D3.js, Cytoscape, Plotly or similar
  • MongoDB, NoSQL
  • Jira/Confluence

Salary and benefits

  • £60,000 - £80,000 joining salary
  • Opportunities for stock options, as an early team member
  • 25 days of holiday + bank holidays
  • Inclusive and flexible working - e.g. part-time or time-shifting requirements
  • A company device (MacBook Pro 14”, or similar)
  • Remote working, with occasional get togethers
  • An allowance to ensure you have a good working setup
